The 5 Types of Marketing Strategy

In this post  of Engage Marketing, you’ll realize that not all marketing strategies are created equal and not all will be right for your business.Every successful small business has a marketing strategy behind it. Strategy builds consistency and consistency builds familiarity. We’ve separated typical small business marketing strategies into 5 groups. There is no right or wrong. Successful businesses have been built on each strategy. Which one do you fit into?

1. The customer focused strategy
This strategy is focused on how the business can improve the customer experience, whether that be through customer service, product quality or emotional connection. A customer focused strategy is low cost and has the highest level of word of mouth with a flow on effect in fostering customer loyalty and repeat sales.

2. The everywhere strategy
The everywhere strategy is for the business owner that wants to see that they’re doing everything possible to be heard and make a sale. They have a nice website, advertise in the paper, sponsor events, drop coupons in the letterbox and jump on top of the latest marketing trends. They spend a lot of money and employ staff that spend a lot of time on making noise.

3. The social media strategy
Typically used by the small business looking for a free sales tool. They blog, have a Linked In profile, Twitter account and are active on internet forums. This strategy is time-intensive and relies on the presentation of the business as an expert in their industry.

4. The traditional strategy
Sit back and advertise.”We got to where we are through advertising so we’re not going to stop now” you hear the business owner say. Advertising is expensive, rarely measurable and has become decreasingly effective. It can work but it requires a repetition and the margin for error is high.

5. The failing strategy
A bad website, average customer service, no sales incentives and no consistency in how they present themselves. This strategy relies on people stumbling upon their business.
