A Bigger Meeting Doesn't Always Mean Better

A new Vegas property targets a different type of meeting planner
A brand as ubiquitous as Trump evokes some pretty strong images. The Donald himself is an outspoken celebrity, his TV shows and trademark hairdo well known to all, and his properties are favorites among gamblers everywhere. With regard to the latter, the company has chosen a number of new locations far from the neon lights and never-ending ringing of slot machines—including the highly acclaimed Trump International Hotel — Tower in New York and Chicago.

But while opening gambling-free hotels wouldn't raise an eyebrow in New York or Chicago, you'd be surprised to learn that the Las Vegas location of the Trump International Hotel & Tower—located smack-dab on the neon-drenched Strip—is also in the casino-free camp.

To further distinguish itself from the surrounding meeting destinations, the Trump Las Vegas has passed on hosting mega-gatherings, instead opting to target smaller groups of up to 30 people. That's a valuable competitive differentiator for many companies, particularly for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Pharmaceutical meeting planners must adhere to specific regulations and often have more complex requirements, so making arrangements with companies that are more familiar with their needs can be a competitive advantage.

"The Trump Hotel Collection takes a different approach than the Atlantic City property—which is part of Trump Entertainment Resorts, a separate, public company," says Katie Conway, the property's marketing manager. "At Trump International Hotel & Tower Las Vegas, we provide the guest with a respite from the Strip with our unhurried atmosphere, an emphasis on privacy and individual service, and a residential feel—hence our choice to be non-gaming and non-smoking.

"Who wants to come out of a blissful experience at a spa, only to trek through miles of smoke and noisy, flashing slot machines?"

A Different Meeting Scene

True to its mission of offering a different type of experience, the Trump Las Vegas offers a meeting room with 960 square feet, another with 1,150 square feet, and a 350-square-foot "Trump Board Room." Compare that 2,460-square-foot total to that of Mandalay Bay, which offers more than 1 million square feet of meeting space on two levels, including a single room of more than 100,000 square feet. Clearly, the Trump property doesn't necessarily believe that bigger is better.

"Our market is the top 1% or so of the international leisure-traveling public, as well as small-to-medium-sized groups who are looking for a refined, sophisticated, state-of-the-art venue," Conway says.
"We are ideally located just steps away from shopping, gambling…everything else the city has to offer."
So while the blackjack tables and slot machines may not be on the property, they are just outside the doors for those wanting to try their luck.

The presentation technologies are state-of-the-art and the culinary team is world class, as meeting planners might expect from a high-end luxury property bearing a name as iconic as Trump.

Las Vegas, in Style

While the Las Vegas International Hotel & Tower strives to separate itself from its nearby competitors, it remains a Trump property. That means the emphasis is on luxury and style. The 64-story tower boasts 1,232 suites and an additional 50 penthouse suites, all with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a magnificent panoramic view of the city.

And while Sin City's attempt to become a more family-friendly destination in the 1990s has been de-emphasized, great efforts have been undertaken to accommodate guests traveling with children. The Trump Kids program offers plenty to keep the little ones happy and occupied, including:

• "Trump Kids" terry cloth slippers.
• A selection of classic board games.
• Popular children's books.
• A collection of the latest children's movies for kids of all ages on an in-suite movie channel
• Trump Kids amenities and toys
• An outdoor heated pool with private air-conditioned cabanas
• Trump Attaché guest services to meet any request—no matter how big or small.
• A map of Las Vegas with Trump Attaché handpicked "must-see" spots.

One of Many Trump Cards

The Las Vegas property is part of a new line of hotels and resorts in the Trump Hotel Collection, which was launched in October of last year. In addition to the Las Vegas, New York and Chicago properties, 10 more projects are under development around the world.
Due in 2009: Trump International Hotel & Tower in Fort Lauderdale, Trump SoHo New York Hotel and Trump International Hotel & Tower Waikiki.
Due in 2010: Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto and Trump Ocean Club International Hotel & Tower Panama.

Due in 2011: Trump International Hotel & Tower Palm Jumeirah, Trump at Cap Cana, Trump Ocean Resort Baja, Trump Scotland and Trump International Hotel & Tower New Orleans.

According to the company, each property in the Trump Hotel Collection features a "distinctly residential atmosphere, modern sensibility, bold architecture and unsurpassed service." In April 2008, the Chicago property received three flames from Conde Nast Traveler—the "hottest" rating a hotel can achieve.

Last but not least, all of the hotels in the Collection feature the Trump Attache program, designed to provide the highest level of customer service. Each Attache department is staffed with multiple workers who work to meet every customer request, including but not limited to:

• Appointments with personal trainers

• Arranging for a chef to provide a private dining experience in-suite

• Stocking kitchens with the guests' favorite groceries

• Gift and souvenir shopping

• Replacing travel necessities left at home

• Reserving babysitters and outfitting suites with special appointments for children

• Arranging every transportation need, from limousine service to private planes

• Secretarial services

• Pet accommodations and amenities

• Before- and after-hours shopping

• Private access to salon services
