Picture
In a recent research,it has been revealed that the use of Carbamazepine during first trimester of pregnancy can cause Spina Bifida and 4 other congenital malformation (physical defect in a baby at the time of birth.)

Carbamazepine is mainly use to treat epilepsy. It is an anticonvulsant drug. This research is presented by Professor from EUROCAT anti-epileptic study working group, Lolkje de Jong-van den Berg,Professor of Pharmacoepideemiology.
It is based on about 2700 pregnancy cases from the 19 European countries and sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline.
Object of Research:
The main purpose for this Research was to find the most associated congenital malformation with Carbamazepine and relative compounds.
Result of Research:
Researcher found that the main malformation was Spina bifida. Other congenital malformations were also found like clept lip, ventricle and AV septal defect, hernia (diaphragmatic) and hypospadias. But they were not significant in numbers.
Conclusion:
Although side effects for Carbamazepine are moderate to related compounds like valproic acid but it has been confirmed that its use must be monitored very carefully during the first 3 month of pregnancy.
